Description
This medication is a proton pump inhibitor used for GI ulcers & erosions. It is used commonly in cats with inflammatory bowel disease and kidney disease.
Omeprazole was superior to famotidine when used to prevent exercise-induced gastritis in racing Alaskan sled dogs (Williamson et al. 2010). When given at 1.5 – 2.6 mg/kg PO q24h it significantly suppressed gastric acid better in dogs than famotidine given at 1 – 1.3 mg/kg PO q12h (Tolbert et al. 2011).
